Unforwarded.log file - "wrong port number" questio

Postby Spider » Tue Mar 14, 2006 12:04 am

I've used GIT to connect to IP 71.115.232.xxx:213 several times (I would see download speeds on NetPeeker when connected). Now I get no download speed on NetPeeker, but the person at 71.115.232.xxx still shows download speeds on NetPeeker).

I enabled the unforwarded log function and here is what the log says over and over..

[Mon Mar 13 23:30:29 2006] network: hw:00:01:03:c0:da:25 EthernetII IPv4 UDP to:71.115.232.xxx:213 from:192.168.0.100:213 'wrong port number'

Is this telling me there is a problem with port 213 not being open at the 71.115.232.xxx computer end or the 192.168.100 computer end? We both have 213 entered in the "Port Number" window of the GIT Configuration screen and both have port 213 opened in our routers.

Any suggestions/answers would be appreciated to correct this error.

P.S. - Thanks ARK, great program when it's connected.

That is saying that it is not forwarding that particular packet because the port number (213) is not in a list of matching port numbers to forward. That is good, since if your GIT's are connected using port 213, and you attempted to forward traffic that used port 213, you would create an infinite loop of forwarding GIT's own forwarded traffic and then instantly forwarding that forwarded packet and so on.

Thanks, I now understand what your saying about the infinite loop and not forwarding port 213.

One more question - When you have two computers via WAN, both with GIT enabled. but no LAN games running between them. Should you see any packet download/upload activity between them, for the GIT application, on NetPeeker? The status I normally see is "Listening" and "Connected". However, we have seen "Download" activity on the GIT application and wondered if this should be occuring.

P.S. - I would like to make a contribution to your site for developing the GIT program as I will be using it quite a bit. You can send me an email concerning this if you want.

Thanks......

GIT will forward any traffic you tell it to, which is why I don't recommend people use "0000-ffff : All sockets" or "217-65535 : All the rest" options. It is best to limit what GIT forwards to just the ports or IPX sockets needed for the particular games you play. If you have GIT set to forward all traffic like that, then all of your NetBIOS and other traffic will be sent along the tunnel too.

If you have GIT connected with TCP connect and TCP listen, you may see TCP state information being sent when GIT is connected but not sending any traffic. Occasional small empty ACK type packets would be normal for any open TCP connection. If they are connected using UDP (which is really better to use if you are capable of configuring the routers on each end to allow it properly) then you should never see any extra traffic from GIT beyond what it is actually tunneling.
