LAN1 - 192.168.1.1-8 255.255.255.192
LAN2 - 192.168.1.10-16 255.255.255.0

is this not possible?

Thats not posible because the ranges overlap but only partially.
The first range is 192.168.1.0-63 and the second range is 192.168.1.0-255
It doesn't matter that you only USE 1-8 and 10-16, the broadcast address is different (192.168.1.63 vs 192.168.1.255) and things will not get sent correctly. This is not specific to GIT or anything GIT can fix. It would not work even on the same local physical network if you tried numbering machines like that.
