Red Alert 2

Postby pbs2000 » Wed Feb 09, 2005 1:38 am

Hello. I have been fighting with GIT and Red alert 2 for a while now.
Other player can see my name at lobby. I cant see his. We cant chat or start a game. VPN connection works fine(stupid 1 connection limit).

We both have static ip's with no firewalls or anything limiting internet traffic. I open for any suggestions. Help please.

The reason why i am trying to set git up is that we are trying to add third player to game, this is not possible with xp vpn. I think that it is easyer to config git between 2 players first. Is there any very simple ipx program (chat etc. for testing purposes) that is known to work with git?

I cheked log files and i think this is the problem:

PC1 forward log:
[Wed Feb 09 16:11:09 2005] network: hw:02:00:4c:4f:4f:50 IEEE802.2 IPX IPX to:00000000.ffffffffffff:1388 from:fd3b9d52.000000000001:1388 'ok'

PC1 incoming log:

Seems like PC2 is forwarding different type of ipx packets to different socket. does this tell anything to anyone?

Problem solved

Postby pbs2000 » Wed Feb 09, 2005 12:39 pm

I have this feeling that i am talking to myself here.., but i came up with solution. All players had to do following from WINDOWS NETWORK CONNECTIONS / LOCAL AREA NETWORK.

INTERNAL NETWORK NUMBER (different in every pc)

IPX ADAPTER FRAME TYPE to IEEE802.2

NETWORK NUMBER (different in every pc)

I have to say that i really do not know what that means, but we are now happy.

so long.

You shouldn't need to change your network numbers. You just need the IPX protocol installed on all the computers and the frame type set to the same type on each computer and any IPX game should work.
Frame type 802.2 is the best, and that is good to just force it to that, but network number 00000000 should work fine.
IPX is a completely different protocol then TCP/IP and uses different numbering schemes to communicate. Its addresses are 80bit instead of TCP/IP's 32bit IP addresses. For IPX, you have a 32bit "network number" and a 48bit "computer address". The computer address portion of the address is basically always the same as your ethernet card's MAC address, and the network number is like your subnet. Unless you have MAC address conflicts, you shouldn't need to adjust the network number. In fact, two computers on different network numbers shouldn't be able to reach eachother using IPX typically anyways.
